Western Authors Series: Susan Cummins Miller

Author Susan Cummins Miller moderates her mystery novel Chasm, part 6 of Miller’s Frankie MacFarlane mystery

series.

Since Major John Wesley Powell first explored the Colorado River in a dory, geologists have been drawn to the

Grand Canyon. Frankie MacFarlane’s no exception. When her old friend, Dora Simpson, calls to ask Frankie to fill

in as geology professor for a small group of students taking a whitewater trip through the heart of the Canyon,

Frankie jumps at the chance. Eight days. One hundred and eighty-eight miles on the River. One mile deep into the

earth. Paradise. What could go wrong?

Susan Cummins Miller, a former field geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and college instructor, is a

research affiliate and SIROW Scholar with the University of Arizona’s Southwest Institute for Research on Women.

In addition to the Frankie MacFarlane mysteries, she is the editor of A Sweet, Separate Intimacy: Women Writers

of the American Frontier, 1800–1922 (TTUP, 2007). She lives in Tucson

Western Authors Series: Marshall Trimble

Western Authors Series: Marshall Trimble

Marshall Trimble moderates his Arizona Outlaws and Lawmen.

A refuge for outlaws at the close of the 1800s, the Arizona Territory was a wild, lawless land of greedy feuds,

brutal killings and figures of enduring legend. These gunfighters included heroes as well as killers, and some were

considered both. Bandit Pearl Hart committed one of the last recorded stagecoach robberies in the country, and

James Addison Reavis pulled off the most extraordinary real estate scheme in the West. With fearless lawmen like

C.P. Owens and George Ruffner at hand, swift justice was always nearby.

Official state historian of Arizona, Marshall Trimble is an award-winning author, “cowboy philosopher,” educator,

lecturer, folk singer and stage performer. He taught local history for forty years at Scottsdale Community College

and appears frequently on radio and television as the state’s goodwill ambassador. His first book, “Arizona,” was

published in 1977 by Doubleday & Co. in New York, and since then he’s written more than twenty books on

Arizona and the West.

Tuesday Talk at the Museum: The Life and Work of Marjorie Reed

Gary Fillmore presents “All Aboard! The Life and Work of Marjorie Reed.”

Marjorie Reed was a prominent 20th century Western artist best known for her paintings of the Butterfield-

Overland Stage Trail. Reed made her living solely as a freelance artist for over 65 years and left behind a

significant body of work. Every bit as colorful as the art is her biographical account. Reed’s romantic attachment to

her subject matter took her from a life of ease in the Hollywood Hills to rustic shacks in the Southwestern deserts

and Bedouin tents in the Middle East. This account gives deep insight into Reed’s character and personality. This

book offers the first comprehensive account of Reed’s life and work. She was an extremely private individual who

led a transient lifestyle, claiming at the age of 81 to have moved once for each year she was alive. As a result, little

biographical information about this respected and sought artist has been available… until now.

Gary Fillmore is an art appraiser, dealer, collector, author and independent scholar. He has been the owner and

operator of the Blue Coyote Gallery in Cave Creek, Arizona since 2002, specializing in regional 20th century and

Native American art. In addition to being a regular contributor to Askart.com, Gary has authored several books. In

2013 he was accepted as an Associate Member of the Western Writers of America (WWA). He lives with his wife

Barbara in Cave Creek.

Whether you choose to participate in a monthly series of Restorative Yoga “The Art of Relaxation” or come to this one-day workshop, you’ll come away with the knowledge and poses (asanas) that relieve stress and revitalize more than hours of sleep.  This workshop is about building a take-home practice for the many benefits of deep relaxation to sooth the nervous system, support immune system function, and so much more.

We may not all have the time to commit to a daily or weekly practice of self-care.  A Saturday workshop for a take-home routine will renew your feeling of wellbeing and inner peace.

11th Annual Cowgirl Up!

M E D I A   RELEASE

Cowgirl Up! Show & Sale Kicks Off 11th Year

Wickenburg, AZ: Desert Caballeros Western Museum’s annual Cowgirl Up! Art from the Other Half of the WestInvitational Exhibition & Sale runs March 18 through May 8. Now in its 11th year, this has become one of the most important art shows for women artists, whose artwork captures the spirit and lifestyle of the American West.

By generating over a half-million dollars in sales for its artists, the Desert Caballeros Western Museum’s Cowgirl Up! invitational exhibition and sale has put Wickenburg on the map as a hot art destination – and not just in Arizona, but throughout the West.

Opening weekend events (March 18-20) include an artists and patrons party, miniatures sale, Bash ‘n Bid Gala, a Chuck Wagon Breakfast, Artists Quick Draw and live auctions. New this year, there will be more space devoted to the miniatures portion of the exhibition and the event will feature upgraded facilities for the opening weekend events.

With 58 artists in this year’s show presenting more than 200 paintings, sculptures and drawings, you would have to travel to major art shows throughout the West to see the breadth and depth of what this event showcases—at one time—in one place.

It’s this broader scope of work not typically found at a Western art show that make this event so unique. “We have artists stretching beyond traditional Western art to embrace the West’s unique lifestyle and spirit,” says Museum Executive Director, Sandra Harris.

Cowgirl Up! Patron Package all-inclusive opening weekend tickets are $275 per person for all Friday, Saturday and Sunday events; individual event tickets are also available. Tickets for the opening weekend “Bash ‘n Bid” sale and dinner only are $175 per person and include buyer’s ballot book.  Tickets to the Chuck Wagon Breakfast, Artists’ Quick Draw and live auction on Sunday, March 20 are $30 each.  A month-long exhibition and sale follow Cowgirl Up!’s opening weekend, running through May 8.  The show is open to the public with general museum admission and unsold artwork will be available for purchase.

For reservations and more information, call the Museum at (928) 684-2272 or logon to westernmuseum.org.

About the Museum

The Desert Caballeros Western Museum, recently named “2007-2008 Western Museum of the Year,” is also known as Arizona’s Most Western Museum. Serving over 55,000 visitors a year, it preserves and exhibits the art and history of the Southwest and the desert frontier, and is well-known for its innovative programming.  The Museum features an extraordinary collection including western and American Indian art, along with the Hays’ Spirit of the Cowboy Collection, one of the most comprehensive collections of western artifacts on display in the country.  Its entire lower level is devoted to a re-creation of life in Late Territorial Wickenburg and to a fascinating, permanent exhibit called Out on the Ranch.  The museum is located at 21 N. Frontier Street in Wickenburg, Arizona.  For information, call 928-684-2272, or visit www.westernmuseum.org.
