At one time called "Red Canyon",
The Box Canyon is located on the Hassayampa River north of Wickenburg.
This is a very scenic area of a walk, hike or picnic. The river flows
through the canyon year round creating an area rich in plant and animal
species. From the stoplights, proceed northwest on
Highway 89/93 for about five miles. On your right, to the east, you will
notice several homes on Moonlight Mesa.. Turn right on dirt road with
sign, "Scenic Loop Drive". Check your odometer at this point.
Proceed through the residential area, after 1/2 miles the road drops down
and crosses Martinez Wash. It is a good, sometimes rough, dirt road,
that can become hazardous after heavy rain. About 1.4 miles
from the highway you will cross a cattle guard and the road turns to the
left. At about 3.5 miles you will pass another road coming in at the right.
A short drive to the top of the hill on this other road (about 1.4 miles)
will reveal a wonderful view of the Hassayampa River Valley, Wickenburg
and Vulture Peak. Return down to the main road and continue straight for
about 3 more miles (6.5 from the highway) where you will pass a small
gold mining operation on your right. This condition of this road varies
so proceed as far as comfortable and park. Walk down the remaining road
to Box Canyon. There are several areas to picnic both up and down the
stream. Return to Wickenburg the same route.
The following series of photographs detail
the trip into the Box Canyon through the River bed from Wickenburg.
